Smart home: smart you!

Greetings Anything Tech clients,

I hope you’re all surviving the winter weather! It seems like a great time to talk about smart home technology.

This might sound complicated, but I reckon some of you already use it! But perhaps you don’t know about the advances in this area.

What do I mean when we talk about smart home technology? Little widgets that can take care of routine tasks, making life easier and safer (and more comfortable).

For example, let’s talk about smart plugs. Smart plugs connect directly to your home's Wi-Fi network. Once plugged into a wall, you plug your appliance (like an electric blanket, heater, or light) into the smart plug. You can then manage the device via an app. So imaging you’re out at dinner, and before you start your drive home you turn on the lights and the heater so the house is warm and bright when you arrive home. Non-wifi timers have been around for a while and these are also good (but are set to a specific time).

There are also a range of smart devices that support independent living. Smart doorbells let you see and speak to visitors without opening the door, while smart speakers can answer questions, play music, read the news, set reminders (e.g. take medication or appointments) and make hands-free phone calls. In the garden, smart watering systems can automatically water plants based on a schedule or weather conditions. Motion-sensor lights can illuminate pathways at night, reducing trip hazards, and smart smoke alarms can send alerts if they detect smoke or low batteries.

The best part is that you don't need to transform your entire home overnight. Starting with just one or two devices can make a noticeable difference. Whether it's a smart plug or timer that switches on a lamp before sunset, a voice assistant that reminds you of appointments, or an automated watering system that keeps the garden thriving, smart home helpers can offer practical support and peace of mind.

If you’re keen to know more or want a hand setting up any devices you already have, please be in touch.

Cheers

Ruth
